2. Web/Mobile App Critique
Facebook is one of the most popular websites in the world; there are more than 2.6 billion active users. The app's purpose is to connect people and the world through the internet. First is to make an account and talk to friends and family from around the globe. It's the easiest and the most user-friendly app to use for all ages. It's also free to download, making it affordable for anyone to use. There is no need to buy a calling card or extra minutes; Facebook can give its users unlimited texts and calls.
The app's functionality is very sleek; the creator made it easy to operate. Once the user is logged in, there are different tabs to use. There are your choices on the very top of the screen; on the left is the news feed where your friends can share posts. Posts are public messages that people can share with everyone or specific groups. The next tab is videos that the users might be interested in watching based on data. Then the middle tab is the Marketplace, where you can shop amongst users. You can choose your location and range; it also has categories to select or search for what you're interested in buying. The fourth tab is the groups you joined or followed; this makes it easier to keep up with each group's posts so that you won't miss anything. Although you're able to see these posts on your main news feed, you can go to the fourth tab instead to see if you've missed any new posts. Your widgets are on the top right-hand corner; there's the menu bar, messenger, notifications, and account setting button. The two most used widgets are messenger and notifications. Many users have the messenger app to communicate with their friends.
On the bottom right corner, you can see contacts are friends that are currently active in the app. You can click on those friends and start chatting with them. The notifications tab checks any new notification from your feed or friends; you can also customize this tab only to see what notifications you can get.
Next is your profile; on Facebook, you're able to customize your profile to your liking. Many people add a profile picture, cover photo, bio, and many more. You also have control over who's able to see your posts. There's an about tab to have other users know more about you; pictures and videos are also kept in albums once you post them. So, you're able to go back and see them again.
Facebook is a great way to connect to different people, not just friends and family. They should consider three improvements: ads, news feed filtering, and a dislike button. The app has had too many ads on their news feed and videos; if the company wants to earn more money, maybe having a small monthly subscription fee to remove the ads can substitute for users who hate ads. Next is news feed filtering; some users would like to only see from people or things they are interested in. But most users have thousands of friends that they don't want to delete or prioritize for their feed individually. Lastly, a dislike button, many people want to dislike a post. Facebook should listen to their customers since this could give them data on things users don't like to see on their feed.
